This is my collection of quotes from the Stargate franchise of films and television shows. Note. this page contains spoilers for the Stargate franchise.

I am a huge fan of the Stargate franchise of films and television shows. All of them center around the present-day US Air Force exploring other planets using an alien transportation device discovered in an archaeological dig in Egypt.

The franchise's plot centers around religion and power--what it means to be a god and what it means to be a follower.

Stargate SG-1

Stargate SG-1 is the first spinoff television show from the original Stargate movie.

The Ori character arc

The Ori are villains introduced in Seasons 9 and 10 of Stargate SG-1. They are a powerful race of humans that long ago evolved to near god-lie beings, and they want the primitive humans of the Milky Way galaxy to worship them.

"Lessons of days gone by teach us what will come to pass."

This is from a Prior of the Ori, talking to Lieutenant Colonel Cameron Mitchell.

"And those who are prideful and refuse to bow down, shall be laid low and made into dust."

This was a message sent from Ori warships to the various spaceships from the Milky Way (including Earth) a few minutes before the Ori began their invasion.

"Leave not the smallest pebble to allow any hindrance that will slow your people's progress"

This was said from a Prior of the Ori to the Sodan--a race of Jaffa warriors.

"And then did Tyolus say to the people of the low plains, 'Seek not the wickedness amongst your neighbors, lest it find purchase in your own house'."

This was a quote from The Book of Origin--the Ori's religious textbook--by Daniel Jackson in response to the above "prideful" quote. He hoped the response would discourage the Ori from attacking, but he failed.

"From the smallest seed of doubt springs forth a mighty poisonous tree of evil."

This is from a Prior of the Ori, explaining why they want to conquer the Milky Way galaxy.

"Great holy armies shall be gathered and trained to fight all who embrace evil. In the name of the gods, ships shall be build to carry our warriors amongst the stars. And we will spread Origin to all the unbelievers. The power of the Ori will be felt far and wide... and the wicked will be vanquished."

This is a quote from the Doci (the Ori pope) as he declares war against the human populations of the Milky Way galaxy.

"Truth is elusive to those who refuse to see it with both eyes wide."

This is a quote from the Book of Origin paraphrased by Adria--the Ori's military leader in Season 10 of Stargate SG-1. Adria spoke it while disguised as an old man. Daniel Jackson recognized the quote as being from the Ori's religious text and uncovered Adria's disguise.

"Blessed are those who walk in unison."

This is a saying from the Book of Origin.

"Gods cannot be gods without those beneath them gazing upwards."

This is a quote from Seevis, a leader of a group opposing the Ori as gods, to justify a planned terrorist attack against tens of thousands of Ori followers.

Later, the Doci makes a similar point by saying:

"What is a god, but a being that is worshiped by those beneath?"

The Jaffa character arc

The Jaffa are a race of humans that were genetically engineered by the Goa'uld to carry larval Goa'uld symbiotes in a marsupial-like pouch. The larval Goa'uld acts as the Jaffa's immune system, giving them superhuman strength and healing abilities. The Goa'uld take advantage of the Jaffa's superhuman strength by using them as the shock troops of the Goa'uld empire.

Much of the plot in Stargate SG-1 is about rebel Jaffa fighting for freedom from their Goa'uld masters.

"Freedom without honor is meaningless."

This quote is from Teal'c as he criticizes his fellow coworkers for using genocide to defend themselves.

"There is more honor in dying at the hands of a brother, than there is in killing a would-be friend."

This was spoken by Gerak--a leader among Jaffa, a race of humans genetically-modified by the Goa'uld to be superior warriors. Gerak was quoting a Jaffa leader that he later killed.

"What is war, but for the preservation of our children?"

This is a quote from Ishta, the leader of a Jaffa rebel group, explaining why her group kills Jaffa that are still loyal to the Goa'uld System Lords.

"A true warrior... knows when to fold 'em."

This was from Teal'c, a Jaffa, while folding his hand in a game of poker.

The Replicator character arc

The Replicators are self-replicating robots who devour entire galaxies for their raw materials. At some point, the Replicators develop the ability to take on human forms and experience human emotions.

"I am more human than the others. First, I thought it was weakness. But now I see.. it makes me capable of so much more. My brothers and sisters will devour entire civilizations in order to replicate... But they will know nothing of cruelty... or betrayal... or revenge..."

The Replicators pride themselves on being emotionless, but Fifth was accidentally designed with very human-like sensitivities. This made other Replicators dislike him and enabled the humans of Stargate Command to trick him. But ultimately Fifth's emotions drive him to become the leader of all of the Replicators.

Ascension character arc

A core part of the Stargate mythology is that intelligent species--like the humans on Earth--are on an evolutionary path to shedding their physical bodies and existing as pure energy.

This process--referred to as Ascension in the show--is a purely physical phenomenon, but various intelligent species have developed their religion and spirituality around Ascension.

"The Universe is vast and we are so small. There is really only one thing we can ever truly control. [...] Whether we are good... or evil."

This is a quote from Oma de Sala, an Ascended Ancient leading Daniel Jackson to a higher plane of existence.

Stargate: Atlantis

Stargate: Atlantis is a spinoff television show from Stargate SG-1. An international science expedition uses the stargate to travel to the lost city of Atlantis--which turns out to be a real outpost built by an ancient race of humans in the Pegasus galaxy.

Our heroes in the international science expedition encounter the Wraith--a race of aliens that evolved as a combination of humans and insects. The Wraith are like vampires: they suck the life-force out of humans as sustenance.

"No retreat in the face of battle. No sympathy for the fallen. No mercy for our enemies."

This ia quote from Stargate: Atlantis. It is a creed taught by the Wraith--a species of aliens that eat humans for sustenance.

Stargate: Universe

Stargate: Universe is another spinoff television series. An international expedition accidentally ends up on an ancient spaceship halfway across the universe with no way to get home.

"Out here on the edge of the universe... who you are and what you believe is everything. It is up to you to decide whether this is a blessing... or a curse."

This quote is from a dream sequence in Stargate: Universe. Tamara Johnson suffered a gunshot wound. She is pregnant with a child who did not survive because of the wound. As the unborn baby dies, she dreams that she is on a paradise-like planet talking to a civilian scientist named Kane. Kane explains that the baby will be allowed to live on the planet, but Tamara cannot join. Kane and the planet exist in real life, but it turns out that the baby is dead--the dream was not real.
